Grammarly Review (2020): Is This Grammar Checker Worth It? Grammarly review - Ask Point

Grammarly review - All questions answered

Introduction -

For a long while, my grandfather was my grammar checker.
Then I was introduced to grammar checker software like Grammarly.
And from that day, I stopped bothering my grandfather too much.
Sounds like a telemarketing ad?
But that’s true; I can’t help.
Grammarly was the first grammar checker I was introduced to, and my experience with it was terrific.
What I learned with my experience and knowledge about Grammarly, let me tell you all in detail in this Grammarly review.
And with that, we will try to find answers to a lot of questions regarding Grammarly.
Let’s get started.

What exactly is Grammarly?

If you have landed on this page searching for Grammarly, you probably know what Grammarly is.
I would not bore you telling the same thing.
You know Grammarly is a grammar checker.
But there is more to it.
Grammarly is one of the most excellent grammar checkers available. It is simple to use, yet advanced grammar checker.
It checks for more than 250+ errors and includes features like plagiarism checker.
It’s now AI-based and works more precisely than ever.
These are some glimpses into it.
But knowing all this, it does not mean it’s a fit for everyone out there.
Is it a fit for you?
Let’s find out.

Do you need Grammarly?

Ok. Let me split it straight for you so that you can easily decide.

Grammarly is not for you if -

You are so good at writing articles that you do not make any typos or grammatical errors ever.
You are so aware of your writing that you are sure you have made no mistake.
You have so much grip on all the aspects of quality writing that you don’t need anyone else’s help.
You have a lot of time to check your articles manually many times to check if you have made mistakes.

If all the above cases apply to you, Grammarly is probably not the right fit for you. You probably don’t need it.

But if one of the above cases is not your case and want to improve more on writing, you probably need to read further.

Then whom Grammarly is for -

Being a blog writer, I would say it’s undoubtedly for bloggers and everyone who writes for a profession. Because one, it saves you a lot of time which you will spend finding mistakes manually and two, it enhances your writing to be easy to read and leave an impact on your readers.

Grammarly is a useful tool for students as well. They can proofread their papers before submitting them. Features like Grammarly’s suggestions let them know what kind of mistakes they are making and repeating.

It’s also useful for teachers who may use it to check students’ work and save their own time quickly.

Grammarly is also every professional’s tool. Professionals need to be formal in their language when writing to their colleagues or their audiences.
There is a lot of difference between writing an email to your colleague or a blog post and talking to your best friend on WhatsApp.

It’s a tool for all writers, no matter what they write for, who wants to stand out in their competition. Who basically wish to rise above the average.

It’s basically for everyone who wants to be extra assured and don’t want small errors like typos errors in their writing.

Now, when you have probably decided if it’s for you, let’s find out if it’s free to use or not?

Is Grammarly free?

Yes.
There are three versions of Grammarly available, which are Free, Premium, and Business.
Out of which, the free version is totally free to use.
You do not need to opt-in for any trial or add any card to it to use it.
You may just sign up for it like Facebook, and you are good to go.
You can use their online editor and all other variants, which we will discuss below in detail, for free. There is no restriction from Grammarly on using them.
However, the features of the free version are limited to grammar, spelling, and punctuation checkers.
We will compare the Free and Premium version in detail, in the latter part of this article.
For now, let’s explore why Grammarly is free.

Why is Grammarly free?

Like most of the big brands, Grammarly has adapted the Free and Premium model of branding.
The free version is where they simply offer some of the features for free so that their customer can get a taste of the software.
And to use its advanced features, there is a Premium version, which is a paid one.
Most of the time, we see that some brands offer reduced free versions with many restrictions.
This is not the case with Grammarly.
Grammarly is aware of this thing, and they have worked amazingly on this.
They offer a lot of features in their free version, which corrects nearly 250+ errors.
This helps most of the beginners who have just started.
This way, it is beneficial for both the Grammarly, and it’s users.
But how does it work? How does it make your content better than before?
Here is how.

How does Grammarly work?

I have used Grammarly for a long time, and I especially like the way it works.
The interface is so easy to work that you don’t need any special skills for it.
There are numerous ways we can use Grammarly. We can use Grammarly’s website editor, we can use their extension, and there are other ways too.
But it works all the ways similarly.
Starting from the start, once you visit their website, you need to sign up. The sign up process is easy, and it takes minutes to set up.

[Sign up ss ]

Once signed up, you are at your dashboard, which is pretty neat and clean btw, you get to see an option to add a new document.
Now, there are two ways you can add a document. One is by uploading the document directly to the server and two; you can copy and paste your text to the editor directly.

[ ss of upload option and empty editor]

As soon as you add your text to the editor, you will see this popup window to set the goal.

[ss of set goal pop up window]

Here things get interesting.
In this option, you can set your goal. It’s basically about what you are aiming for.

Audience

The first option is “Audience” where you can set what kind of audience is going to read what you are about to write.
By understanding what kind of audience you are going to serve this content to, you can set it to “General”, “Knowledgeable” or Expert”.

[ss]

Grammarly lets you understand what it means to set it to different options just below the tabs.
[ss]

Formality -

Next is the “Formality” option.
Here you can choose if you are going to write formal, informal, or neutral content.

[ss]

I prefer to keep it neutral as it restricts the slang and allows standard casual expressions.

Domain -

Then there is the “domain” option. This option lets you choose between for what domain you are writing.
It is not as complex it may sound.
You just need to choose if you are writing for academic, business, general, technical, casual, or creative purposes.

[ss]

Although this option is available to premium members only.

Tone -

The next option is “Tone”.
Remember, we talked about the importance of the tone of the writing before. This feature helps you stick to the tone you want to write in.
These are the options available -

[ss]

Intent -

And the last one is “Intent”.
This option is to give a human touch to the writing.
Here you decide what your intent behind writing this piece of content is.
You may choose “Inform”, “Describe”, “Convince”, “Tell a story” or all of them.

[ss]

Once you set up your goals, you may hit the done button to apply all these options.

After setting up the goal, Grammarly quickly starts showing suggestions under the “All alerts” tab on the right side of the windows.

[ss]

You can also check your errors one by one by clicking on the mistakes in the content itself.

[ss] with the mistake in the right bar.

Grammarly shows an explanation and suggestion to your mistake. You can fix the error by clicking on the “suggestion.”
This is very important for a grammar checker to show the explanation. It makes you know your mistake and so that you can be aware of it next time.
Grammarly has an “Assistant” bar in the top right, which is Grammarly’s writing assistant.
It includes various options like “Overall score”, goals and categorization of errors.
Here “overall score” tab shows you how you are performing based on the content. Here is what you get to see when you click this option.

[ss]

It includes Word Count, Readability Score, and Vocabulary. You may download this report as a PDF as well.

Then there is this premium option tab, which tells you that you have some more errors in this content that needs premium features to show. You can unlock these errors by upgrading to the premium version.

Plagiarism checker and get experts writing help are also premium features which you get to see when you upgrade to Grammarly premium. We will talk about them in the Grammarly premium version section of this article.

Bottom line -

The working of Grammarly is simple to use and advanced in features. It takes minutes to it to proofread your content and tell you where exactly you need improvisations.

How to use Grammarly?

So this happens with everyone.
Whenever we are about to try a new thing that we have no idea about, we are a little nervous about how to use it?
Back in the days when computers were a new sort of thing, this was happening with everyone about every new idea.
But, these days, most of the software companies know the pain points of their customers. They know how to make things easy for their users.
Grammarly is on the same path of making things easy for their users.

Is Grammarly easy to use?

Using Grammarly is way too simple.
A 5-year-old can use it.
Or maybe ten years old.
But all I want to say is that it’s simple.
You just need to go to their website and sign up like you sign up on Facebook.
Then there are numerous ways you can use Grammarly.
We will talk about each way you can use Grammarly below.

Grammarly web - How to use Grammarly on their website?

I love those softwares which I can use on the go.
Grammarly web version is one of them.
Once you are signed up to Grammarly, you will be on your dashboard.
Click on the “New” button, and the editor opens.
You can paste your content in this editor and instantly check it for errors.

[ss of dashboard.with paste here sign]

Grammarly will automatically save your document to make sure you can use it in the future.
Other than that, you can download and print this document as well by simply visiting the toggle menu on the right side.

[ss of the menu]

Grammarly extensions for browsers -

I was using Grammarly by pasting my text into the editor for a long time.
Then I got to know about it’s extensions.
Grammarly extensions are super relief for a writer. It saves you a lot of time.
You just need to download the extension according to your browser, which is available on most of the popular browsers like Chrome, Safari, and Mozilla.
Install it, and that’s it.
It automatically starts analyzing your text on most websites and platforms like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Wordpress editors, and even Gmail.
There is this question about How to use Grammarly on Gmail?
There is no need for separate integration of it into Gmail. It works from the browser extension.

[ss of Gmail compose box with Grammarly toggle]

Grammarly also claims to be working in Google Docs in the Beta version.
There are some questions on the internet that Grammarly did not work in Google Docs.
For the first time, it did not work for me as well in Google Docs, then I updated the Grammarly chrome extension, and restarted the browser. It worked fine after it.
So if it does not work for you, try the above method for it.

Grammarly for Windows and MAC -

Grammarly also provides its desktop version.
Grammarly desktop versions work precisely the same way their web editors work.
You can download their desktop client on their website for Windows and MAC both.
The real question here is that does Grammarly work offline?
And the answer is NO.
Your device should be connected to the internet to make it work.

Grammarly for Microsoft Word and Scrivener -

Grammarly is available to be integrated with Microsoft Word.
You can integrate the Grammarly add on with Microsoft Word, and it will start correcting your text right within MS Word.
You can download the add on from here on the Grammarly website, and you will be guided to install it on Microsoft Word from there.
Here is a video for a better explanation -

You can download their keyboard apps from the Grammarly website or respective app stores.

Grammarly Free Vs Premium -

When I started using Grammarly, I used the free version, and I thought that’s all from Grammarly.
Then I get to know about the premium version.
Most of the brands these days use this “Free and Premium” strategy to attract their customers.
They offer a limited features version for free so that the customers get a taste of the software, and then if they wish, they may use the full-fledged version by paying for a premium version.
Most of the time, the free version only offers a glimpse into the software and is not more of use.
But that’s not the case with Grammarly’s free version.
It’s useful and worthy.
There is more to the free version, and there is a whole new world of features in the premium version.
We will get to know about it in the comparison between the Grammarly free and premium version, below.

Grammarly Free version -

Grammarly’s free version is a robust version of a free grammar checker. It has a lot to offer.
The best thing about it is that it is not restricted too much to create an urge for a premium version that other software companies do.
Within its limitations, the free version works great.
The features in the free version are limited but useful. Unlike other Grammarly alternatives, the free version of the software is available on all the platforms where the premium version is.
So basically, the intent of Grammarly is clear. They want you to use the software for free so that you may like it so much that you go for the premium version.
Now let’s talk about the features.
As mentioned before, the features are limited in the free version.
Grammarly has divided the features into categories.
There are five major categories - Correctness, Clarity, Engagement, Delivery, and Plagiarism.
Under these categories, they have listed their features.
The Grammarly free version offers some of the features from every category except “Plagiarism. “
The Plagiarism feature is a premium feature on Grammarly.
Which features Grammarly allows explicitly in the free version and how they enhance your writing?
Let’s find out.

Grammar, Spelling and Punctuation checker -

Grammarly free version checks for basic grammar mistakes, spelling mistakes, and punctuation mistakes.
We all make these common mistakes, especially when we are writing a little longer piece of content.
Whenever I check my content on Grammarly, I always end up finding these mistakes.
Mistakes like punctuation mistakes are always part of my first draft.
Here is how these mistakes look in Grammarly’s detector -
[ss of all the three mistakes with the caption.]

Conciseness checker-

This feature is placed under the clarity category.
Conciseness is all about communicating in as few words as possible.
Most of the time, we end up writing words or phrases which are not essential and can be eliminated.
Consciousness checker picks all those words and suggests you to eliminate those words.
It makes your writing easy to read and to the point.
Although this feature is not available on all the websites in Grammarly free version. It is limited to some websites.
Here are some example of conciseness error detected by Grammarly -

[ss 2-3]

Tone detection -

Tone detection let’s you know how your text sounds.
It works instantly on platforms like Gmail.
It analyzes the text and let’s you know by an emoji how your text sounds.
This is how it looks on Gmail-
[ss in pictures>>screenshot]
This feature is in Beta mode and for the free version it is limited to some websites.

The support and other features -

Grammarly provides email support to their users.
For the free version you get email support where you get your reply in around 24 hours.
I sent them a query from the free version and I got a reply within 24 hours which is a decent time period to be replied in.
Other than all the features listed above, Grammarly provides a personal dictionary feature where you can include some words that you think are ok to use.
You can add the words right from the editor or you can add them separately in the customize section.
Here is how it looks -

[ss]

Grammarly Premium version -

The interface in Grammarly premium is the same as the Grammarly free version.
The difference is in features.
I am excited to tell you about the Grammarly premium version. It has so much to offer.
Like every other software’s premium version, Grammarly goes advanced in it’s premium version.
To be honest, the real essence of Grammarly’s features lies in the premium version.
There are a lot more errors Grammarly premium picks up, which the free version does not pick.
I checked the same content in the Grammarly free version & the premium version.
The number of all errors found in the premium version were 86 when it was 10 in the free version.

[ss]

Now, let’s compare the Grammarly free vs Grammarly premium version features.
The Grammarly premium comes with all the features it’s free version has, that we just been through above.
Plus, there are more advanced features which we will talk about one by one below.

Consistency in spelling and punctuation -

In this era of chat language, there are lots of subtle grammatical errors which we are not even aware of.
Grammarly free version comes with grammar, spelling and punctuation checker.
There are many kind of grammar, spelling and punctuation mistakes.
The premium version of Grammarly also checks for advanced grammar, spelling and punctuation mistakes.
Here how it is different -
[ss simple]
[ss advanced]
Also, Grammarly premium version, with all these advanced mistakes, checks for consistency in spelling and punctuation.

[ss]

Fluency -

There is one more advanced feature under correctness which is ‘Fluency”.
It makes sure your writing is fluent and gives you suggestions according to that.
Here is an example of that -

[ss]

These advanced features add more correctness to your writing and makes your content more proofreaded at the smallest level.

Here is some more example of premium correctness features of Grammarly -

[ss]

Readability -

I have experienced this issue on a lot of websites.
It happens many times when I am reading an article and there comes a sentence which is so long that I have to read again to understand it.
Readability feature in Grammarly premium solves this issue.
It lets you know which sentence will be not easy to understand at one go for readers and they might need to re-read it.
This way it saves you from writing something which breaks the flow of the reader.
Cool, isn’t it?
Here is how it looks when suggested -
[ss]
Other than this there are more features under the clarity category of Grammarly premium which you will surely like to have.
For example it tells you at every place where you write in a passive voice.
However, passive voice is not a Grammatical mistake but most of the readers like to read in an active voice. It’s direct and easy to read in an active voice.

[ss]

Compelling vocabulary -

This is my personal favorite.
Learning new words and making our vocabulary strong is joyful and impressive for us.
But for most of the people, keeping themselves updated with strong vocabulary is a little hard .
Especially for those who are a little busy and do not have time to work on vocabulary.
Grammarly has used technology in a brilliant way to solve this problem of writers.
There are lot’s of common words which your readers read everywhere.
They are so common that they make your readers loose interest in the article.
“Compelling vocabulary” feature suggests you some uncommon words in place of those common words.
This way your article becomes more interesting and it stands out.
Here is an example of this amazing feature -

[ss]

Lively sentence variety -

Writing is a long term process.
We write long piece of content which take days to finish.
It is normal that in this duration, we might loose some interest in what we are writing and we just try to end the sub topic as soon as possible to meet that particular day’s goal.
It shows in the writing when the reader reads it.
This feature checks your sentence in order and finds if the order of sentence is boring or not.
It suggests you to change the order of words in the sentence to make your sentence interesting.
This way you can realize your mistake and correct it before it harms your end goal of making quality content.
This is an example of this feature working in Grammarly -

[ss]

Confident language -

Assurity is important when you are trying to deliver knowledge to someone who doesn’t know about that thing.
For quality writing, it’s important whatever you write, you are assured that it’s a fact.
Grammarly also used this rule and made a feature around it called confident language.
This feature makes sure that whatever you are writing sounds confident.
How does it do that?
Well, suppose you added “I think” somewhere in your content.
Grammarly analyses that line and if it finds it to be not confident, it shows you a suggestion to replace it.
[ss]
Who would not like to sound confident?

Politeness -

Our mood interferes with our thoughts a lot.
This happens to me a lot when I am writing long pieces of content.
And if you are writing with that mood somewhere in back of your mind, it shows in your writing.
That’s where we loose politeness and sometimes end up adding some negative words which makes our reader uncomfortable to read.
“Politeness” feature makes sure you are not using any harsh words in your writing. If it finds any words like this, it shows you suggestions with replacement of better and polite words.
How far we have come in this aspect of technology, right?
This is how it looks -
[ss]

Formality level -

I have a habit of ending sentences with prepositions.
I was not aware of this habit of mine before I started using Grammarly premium.
See, all my alerts under delivery category are of this -

[ss]

This feature marks out all the words which your reader may object to.
It also marks words like “u” instead of “You” which we use as chat language.

[ss]

This feature is all about making your writing as formal as possible.

Inclusive language -

Writing is as communicating as speaking.
The only difference is your readers read instead of listening.
Whatever precautions we take while we are speaking, we should take those while writing as well.
When we are speaking, we always make sure that we speak respectfully and do not hurt someone unintentionally.
That’s important.
Likewise, we should also make sure that what we write also never hurts anyone.
If you believe in this concept, this feature is for you.
Inclusive language feature eliminates all the words which need a replacement with respectful words.
Here is an example of replacement with respectful word -

[ss]

Plagiarism checker -

As the name suggests, plagiarism checker checks for plagiarism in your content.
The Grammarly plagiarism checker analyses your content and marks all part of it which is plagiarised.
It shows the percent of content which is copied and also tells you which part was found on which web page on the internet.
Grammarly claims that they search your content on 16 billion web pages for plagiarism, which is a huge number of web pages.
Grammarly is among some of the grammar checkers which provides plagiarism checkers.
Here is how it looks when you check for plagiarism on Grammarly -
[ss from other sources]

Is Grammarly premium worth it?

Yes, it does.
As mentioned before, I was quite satisfied with the free version but once I tried the premium version, I actually got to know it’s real power.
The free version is actually a taste of a few dishes from the package of whole dishes here.
The premium version opens up a whole new range of features which makes your writing error free on another level.
I proofreaded same document into the free and premium version and it was like they were two different documents. The premium version one was better than the free one.
What I would recommend to you is that if you are happy with the free version and it fits your needs, keep using it.
But I would highly suggest you give the premium version a try. You will love it.
If you just want to try, you can purchase the premium version with a billing cycle of one month.
This way you can try if and decide if you need it or not. If you don’t feel like you need it,you may cancel the subscription before the next billing date.

Is Grammarly safe?

There is this question around the web that, is it safe to use Grammarly?
I would say, it depends.
Like every other website, Grammarly collects data and information.
It is what the purpose of collecting it makes if safe or unsafe.
I read summary of Grammarly Privacy Policy and I found their declaration that
  • They don’t sell data.
  • Paid versions are the only way they make money.
  • They use a small number of trusted third parties.
I explored more about this question of privacy and I very much agreed to this quora answer by Dave Mackey.
I also found a Reddit answer about the technicalities of Grammarly’s privacy under cyber security thread. If you understand it, you may read it here.
After exploring all these answers and privacy policy of Grammarly, my take on it is that It is safe to use Grammarly.
However, you can choose to turn it of for some websites like your bank website or anywhere you add your transaction details.

How accurate is grammarly?

Ok, there are two aspects to it.
One, is the technical aspect where we can talk about how accurately Grammarly follows the logics?
Two, how humanly the software is?
Talking about the technical aspect, if we neglect some errors here and there, Grammarly is almost 100% accurate.
I have used Grammarly for a long time and I have never faced any major accuracy issue with it.
So technically Grammarly is almost 100% accurate.
Now, when it comes to how humaly the software is dealing with the errors, I have compared Grammarly with human proofreading in the next section of this article below.

Grammarly Vs Human proofreading

Is Grammarly better than human proofreading?
The answer is a NO.
No matter how advanced a software becomes it can not add the natural intelligence to it.
Grammarly is no doubt an advanced grammar checker software. It has changed the way we used to consider grammar checker softwares before.
But there are a lot of things that a software can not do but a human can.
The major problem here is that Grammarly or any other grammar checker can not understand the context.
Context is an essential part of communication. Humans can do that when they are communicating to each other but a software can’t, not for now surely.
And to be honest it will be not fair to compare a software’s intelligence with human intelligence.
They are two different things. At Least in the age we are living in right now.
However, Grammarly is working on making it’s software more intelligent by using technologies like AI (Artificial Intelligence). Setting goals at the start of a document in Grammarly is an example of this.
It totally depends on what you are writing for.
If you are writing a book, human proofreading is the only way to proofread the whole book.
And If you are writing content for your blog, website or email, then Grammarly can surely help you a lot.
If you are writing a long piece of content, I would recommend you to proofread with Grammarly and then proofread it yourself before publishing it.

Grammarly Pros and Cons -

It’s important to hold pros on one hand and cons on the other hand comparing if it’s a right balance for you or not.
Although, Grammarly comes with a number of features and more things, It does not mean it is a perfect grammar checker.
There are of course pros and cons of it like every other thing in this world.
So without further ado, let’s jump to the pros and cons of Grammarly.

Pros -

  1. Useful and less restricted free version.
  2. Wide range of premium features.
  3. Wide range of integration with platforms like Google Docs and more.
  4. Higher accuracy rate.
  5. Using AI technology to improve the human touch to the software.
  6. Simple yet impressive interface.

Cons -

  1. Little expensive.
  2. Chat support will be a great support option to have.
  3. More human touch needed to make it somewhere near to human proofreading.

Grammarly testimonials

“Grammarly is the best online grammar checking software because of its accuracy and easy integration with Word and online text boxes.” - www.toptenreviews.com

My take on it -

In my previous post, I compared some of the popular grammar checkers available on the internet.
During research of that post, I didn’t find any grammar checker which is equal to grammarly in all the aspects. Even it’s free version was better than some of the paid grammar checkers.
Talking about the free and premium version of Grammarly, I will be straight forward to you and this will be my suggestion to you -
“If you are using the free grammarly version and you are satisfied with it, you don’t need to buy the premium version.
But if you want to make your writing a step ahead of the competition, Grammarly premium will be very helpful.”

This was all about Grammarly review from my side.
I hope it helps you decide if Grammarly is a fit for you or not.
